Wendy's Serves Up Meals For Carb Counters

- 26 April, 2004 -

Wendy's is testing combo meals for carb counters watching their buns. Choosing a cheeseburger or a grilled chicken sandwich without the bun has always been an option at Wendy's, but the Company has decided to actively promote bunless sandwiches for the first time. As part of the test beginning today, customers at 248 Wendy's restaurants in six U.S. markets will be able to order new "Meals for Carb Counters." These meals feature either a cheeseburger or grilled chicken breast on a bed of Romaine lettuce, topped with slices of tomato and red onion; a Caesar side salad; and a medium Diet Coke. "We're actively exploring new, creative ways to highlight the many options our menu provides," said Tom Mueller, president and chief operating officer, Wendy's North America. "By eliminating the bun and substituting a Caesar side salad for French fries, we're creating terrific meal choices for customers watching their carbohydrate intake." The entire cheeseburger meal has six grams of carbs, while the grilled chicken meal has eight. Recommended pricing for these new options will be the same as Wendy's regular combo meals. A second _ pound beef patty can be added for 89 cents or an additional chicken breast for $1.99. Test market locations include Virginia Beach, Va.; Salt Lake City; Kansas City; St. Joseph, Mo.; Tulsa and Wichita. The test will be supported with local radio and outdoor advertising, as well as point-of-purchase merchandising materials. Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers was founded in 1969 by Dave Thomas and is the third largest quick-service restaurant chain in the world, with 6,500 restaurants in the United States, Canada and international markets.
