Baltimore, MD - 2 September, 2003 -
Education experts agree that a solid foundation and comfort with math is fundamental for academic success and throughout life. To help children develop a love of math, and in celebration of Mathematics Education Month in April, Sylvan Learning Center created a free online Math Activity Booklet. The entire family can enjoy the activities focused on math, writing, reading and research skills, which help children understand the role that math plays in the classroom, at home and in the workforce. By experiencing math in fun and creative ways, children can learn to love and appreciate math as a part of their daily routine. Children often view math as difficult, dull or not useful in real-life. Unfortunately, many parents feel the same way, says Richard E. Bavaria, Ph.D., vice president of education for Sylvan Learning Center. Yet math is essential and can be enjoyable. Parents can make math more fun and approachable by linking it to real-world examples and using games and activities to encourage math discovery in children. The Sylvan Learning Centers online Math Activity Book provides 30 days of math writing topics, trivia, questions and puzzles. During the month of April, Sylvan Learning Center will post a new activity page daily. Children can log on to www.educate.com/activities and download or print the days activities and play the game of math. Math isnt just about numbers and calculations. Its also about understanding how we use math. The writing topics let children explore their imaginations and open themselves up to a wonderful world of math. Sample writing topics include: Write about a career that uses math on a daily basis. Write about a book you read that used or talked about math. Imagine a day without math. How would you figure out how much you could buy with your allowance or tell time? Write about a day without math and how you would do things differently. Also available online, Sylvan Learning Center offers tips on writing, reading, making math learning fun and much more. For tips and information, visit www.educate.com/tips.
