When Michael Anderson graduated from Cornell University last May, he had something many graduates from last year lacked a job. After several unsuccessful interviews throughout his senior year, Michael was offered a sales training position with a commodities brokerage firm. But within two months of starting that job, Anderson knew it was not what he wanted to be doing and found the shortage of other job prospects discouraging. Thus, he decided to take matters into his own hands. After quitting his sales job, the life-long Burbank resident started a real estate company and worked as a controller for his mother’s Christmas business, all while dreaming about going into business for himself. While researching many different franchise systems, he came across Maui Wowi Fresh Hawaiian Blends- the leading franchisor of gourmet, all-natural Hawaiian blends sold nationwide. At the end of January 2004, he purchased an existing Maui Wowi franchise in Burbank, giving him ownership of three locations. Recently, he completed the purchase of another set of franchise rights, bringing his total location ownership to six. Currently, he is operating a Maui Wowi kiosk used at fairs and festivals. He was recently approved to open his second location at 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica this April and his goal is to have all six locations up and running by 2006. “ I want to control my own destiny. I am confident that I will succeed as a Maui Wowi franchise owner, as I have high aspirations for myself,” he added. Coming from an entrepreneurial family has influenced Anderson. During high school, he helped his parents open and operate a retail swimming pool supply store in Burbank. The summer before his junior year of college, Anderson established Dr. Christmas Rents, Inc., a Burbank entertainment industry prop rental business, taking the concept from its founding partners and developing it into a working business. Anderson’s hard work and positive attitude have gotten him this far and as a Maui Wowi franchise owner, he aims to be involved with more than 100 event days this year and more than 140 next year. His entrepreneurial desire recently got him accepted into the 2003-2004 “Leadership Burbank” class, a selective, ten month-long community-based program, sponsored by the Burbank Chamber of Commerce, that provides a leadership training program for people who live or work in Burbank. Anderson also mentors high school students on entrepreneurship and sits on the board of directors for Lighting D cor Group, Inc. (of Burbank) and Dr. Christmas Rents, Inc., the company he co-founded.
