U. S. Fact Who Needs Home Care?

An estimated 36 million people ? 12.4% of the population ? are 65 years and older. By 2030, nearly 20% of the population will be 65 years and older. The 65+ population, which was more than 36 million people in 2005, is projected to nearly double to more than 71 million people by 2030. The 85+ population, which was 5.1 million in 2005, is expected to nearly double to 9.6 million people by 2030. Nearly 40% of women and about 20% of men 65 years and older were living alone in 2003. Nearly 25% of all American adults currently provide daily companionship or assistance to a parent or relative.* The great majority of caregivers (83%) are helping relatives. The typical family caregiver is a 46-year-old woman with at least some college experience who provides more than 20 hours of care each week to her mother.
