Cinnabon Opens 500th Bakery

Cinnabon(R), a subsidiary of AFC Enterprises, Inc., announced it opened its 500th bakery. The bakery opened to large fanfare and media coverage in Tokyo, Japan last week. The 500th bakery opening comes on the heels of Cinnabon recently signing an additional development agreement with its franchise partner in Japan, Sugakico Systems Co., Ltd. The deal for 70 more bakeries more than doubled the existing agreement, signed in July 1999, for 60 bakeries. Sugakico Systems, which operates 16 locations in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, plans to build an additional 114 Cinnabon locations over the next five years in the regions of Kanto, Chubu and Kansai. Sugakico has also purchased Cinnabon's four company-operated bakeries in Hawaii and plans to build three additional bakeries in the state. Cinnabon is the world-wide leader in the QSR cinnamon roll bakery category. The bakeries are located in 42 states and 16 foreign countries. Founded in Seattle, Wash., in 1985, Cinnabon bakeries are traditionally located in high-traffic venues such as shopping malls, train stations and travel plazas. The bakeries typically are located in 500- to 1,500-square- foot areas. Cinnabon bakeries have built a reputation for serving fresh, aromatic, oven-hot cinnamon rolls made with premium Indonesian cinnamon and topped with sweet, rich, cream cheese-based frosting. Cinnabon had system- wide sales of approximately $184.4 million in 2000. Cinnabon is a subsidiary of AFC Enterprises, Inc., the operator and franchisor of more than 3,690 restaurants, bakeries and cafes in 33 countries.
