Cartridge World North America today announced its expansion plans that span across four continents, opening more than 900 stores in 35 different countries with system-wide revenues in excess of $100,000,000. Cartridge World is the first retail cartridge refilling concept to take on the manufacturing giants such as HP, Lexmark, and Cannon. Cartridge World opened its first store in the United States in January 2003, and now has more than 200 open locations across America, with 150 more stores coming soon. In fact, more than 90 percent of the United States market is currently under development by Cartridge World. Every week, five new store agreements are signed, which will result in additional locations. A retail refilling concept is bad news for big printer and copier makers who count on sales of ink and toner cartridges for a dependable revenue stream. As recently as two years ago, 100 percent of H-P’s profits were derived from recurring cartridge sales. Cartridge refillers, driven in large part by the aggressive franchisors, are ramping up sales at a rate of 10 percent each year, compared to six percent growth from big tech companies.
