Jim Treliving, Southlake, Tex., resident and Chairman and Founder of Boston Pizza Restaurants, L.P., and his business partner of more than 30 years, George Melville, will be honored with the CIRAS Henry Singer Award on Sept. 22, in Alberta, Canada. This prestigious award recognizes unique individuals whose vision encompasses a blend of community service with business. True to the award, Treliving and Melville have established a successful company that generates over $370 million in annual sales and has been named one of Canada's Best 50 Managed Companies for 10 consecutive years. With more than 190 locations throughout Canada, the restaurant chain is the number one casual dining concept in the country. In 1990, under the leadership of Treliving and Melville, the company established The Boston Pizza Foundation, which has raised more than $3 million for organizations such as the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, Kids Help Phone and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. In addition, the Foundation makes charitable donations to organizations operating in communities served by their franchisees. Treliving has been involved with the Boston Pizza concept since the early 1960s. After serving in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, he became a management trainee at a Boston Pizza restaurant in Alberta. He then negotiated to acquire the first Boston Pizza franchise in British Columbia. After Treliving opened several additional restaurants, Melville joined Treliving as a business partner in 1973 and together, they acquired the franchise rights to the company 10 years later. In 2001, he moved to Dallas to run the parent company for U.S. operations. An avid hockey fan, Treliving serves on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Hockey Foundation, Chairman of the Central Hockey Leagues, Mighty Peace Oil Services, Ltd., and Global Entertainment Corporation. In Dallas, he has partnered with Solving the Puzzle of SIDS as title sponsor for the premier golf tournament, which is planned for Sept. 30, 2004, at the historic Oak Cliff Country Club. Melville, a resident of Vancouver Canada, earned his Chartered Accountant degree in 1968 and has been associated with Boston Pizza Restaurants since 1973 and the Boston Pizza Foundation since its inception in 1990. Active in other industries, Melville serves as director of the Central Hockey League, Global Entertainment Corporation and Fountain Tire. He is also a member of the Board of Governors for Kwantien University College.
